Today, the Governor called for banning so-called "assault weapons" and targeting gun dealers.

House Republicans strongly oppose this effort.

"The Governor's call to ban 'assault weapons' and go after gun dealers is reckless and

unconstitutional. This is backdoor gun control that targets law-abiding New Mexicans while violent criminals keep getting a free pass.

I support bipartisan policies that lock up violent offenders, but I will not support targeting the gun rights of responsible, law-abiding New Mexicans. In the middle of a crime crisis, taking away families' right to defend themselves is dangerous and wrong.

House Republicans will not support any policy that punishes responsible gun owners instead of

holding violent offenders accountable. We will stand firm for the Second Amendment and the

safety of New Mexico families."
