Dr. John and Cecilia Bell, Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Board Members, will host tour of Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark on July 26, 2014, at 9:30 AM. They will focus the tour on the role of and care provided to the members of the 9th & 10th Cavalry and 24th & 25th Infantry at Fort Bayard.
July 26 marks the 22nd anniversary of the dedication of the Buffalo Soldier Statue at Fort Bayard. On that day crowds gathered at the site for the celebration. Retired Generalo Benjamin Davis, a Buffalo Soldier Descendent, cited the bravery of the Buffalo Soldiers under adverse conditions and struggle of the black people in his keynote address. The statue remains a fitting tribute to the brave men of the 9th and 10th Cavalry.
A year earlier, in June of 1991, a Fund Drive held by the Mimbres Regional Arts Councilto match funding obtained through the State of New Mexico 1% Art Fund started to depict one aspect of the early history of Fort Bayard. Local sculpture, Greg Whipple, donated his time to research and create a full-sized Buffalo Soldier Statue. The sculpture was to portray Cpl. Clinton Greaves stationed at Fort Bayard with a 9th Cavalry Regiment in 1876-77. "Greaves was the 1st soldier at Fort Bayard to be awarded the Medal of Honor. for saving the lives of his commanding officer, five other soldiers, and three Navajo Scouts in battle with renegade Apaches." ( Silver City Daily Press, June 14, 1991)
The tour starts at 9:30 AM. Participants are to meet at the Fort Bayard Museum which will be open from 9:15 - noon. Participants are to wear good walking shoes and bring a cap or hat, sunscreen, water, and a camera or binoculars. Although there is no charge for the tour or museum visit, donations are accepted.
