Wednesday, April 29, 2025 I Sixth Judicial District Attorney Norman R. Wheeler announced today that Evan Miles Ledon was held without bond in a Pre-Trial Detention hearing for charges of Larceny and Tampering with Evidence. Sixth Judicial District Trial Attorney David D. Vandenberg was the prosecutor at the hearing in the Luna County District Courthouse, Deming, New Mexico. Ledon will be held until trial.
On November 15, 2024, Deming Police were dispatched to a referenced Larceny in progress. Witnesses were driving on Zinc Street when they noticed a male stealing copper wiring from an electrical service hatch on the sidewalk on Cedar Street. The witness recorded on his cell phone the male pulling wire from the electrical service hatch . He showed the video to the responding officers.
The officers following black drag marks and pieces of black coated copper wiring left behind, they followed the trail. The video showed that LEDON was wearing a black hoodie, and officers noticed a black hoodie thrown behind a gas meter in the alley. Officers located LEDON, who had stopped, attempting to garner the help of a man who was an acquaintance. A large amount of black covered copper wire lay at LEDON’S feet. LEDON was arrested and released on March 7, 2025. LEDON was arrested again on Violation of his release conditions on February 21, 2025.
The investigation into the theft of copper wire that was occurring, primarily at Union Pacific, Deming Station and the City of Deming light poles and covers. Several transactions at United Recycling of copper scrap metal showed an accomplice of LEDON selling more than 2,000 pounds of copper metal between November 2024 and February 2025. On February 21, 2025, LEDON was located at the Baymont motel, under an active arrest warrant, once inside Detectives found LEDON with a large amount of copper wire rolled into coils, cut black rubber tubing from copper wire and drug paraphernalia. LEDON has denied his involvement in the thefts.
