Silver City, NM, February 1, 2026---The February 3rd monthly support meeting of PFLAG Silver City will feature the coming out stories of allies to the LGBTQ+ community, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited.
One definition of an ally is "one that is associated with another as a helper : a person or group that provides assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity, or struggle." Social movements benefit from allies. For example, one reason most American women achieved the right to vote in 1920 was because they had the support of many men. During the Civil Rights Movement, many White Americans supported the struggle of Black and brown citizens. Similarly, there are many heterosexual Americans who are allies to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning people. Most marginalized persons or groups fighting for freedom know that allies are important.
Several straight allies of the LGBTQ+ community will share their stories of coming out as an ally at the PFLAG meeting. Some people are allies because they have an LGBTQ+ child or family member; others have an LGBTQ+ colleague, student or neighbor; some see their allyship as a civil rights partnership. The reasons vary and are highly personal.
