Joseph Drake of the American Legion will update Rotary on his organization at its meeting at noon on December 9. He is currently Commander of Allingham-Golding American Legion Post 18 here in Silver City, as well as the Commander of District 7 of The American Legion Department of New Mexico.

Additionally, Joe is a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12212 and Marine Corps League Gaffney-Oglesby Detachment 1328, both from this area.  He serves as the Officer-in-Charge of both the Marine Corps League and American Legion Honor Guards.  The Honor Guards provide funeral honors for deceased veterans and present Colors at various events around the area.

Joe served over 27 years in the United States Navy as a member of the Submarine Force.  He enlisted in the Navy's Nuclear Power Program in 1980 and was commissioned as an officer in 1991.  Joe retired from active duty December 31, 2007.  Following his retirement from active duty, Joe continued his work with submarines for another 15 years, supporting Submarine Force modernization as a Project Manager responsible for schedule development and execution, and providing oversight of modernization efforts for the entire Submarine Force. He and his wife Jean retired and moved to New Mexico permanently about three years ago.  They reside in Silver City.

The Rotary Club will meet in the conference room of Gila Regional Medical Center. Visitors should enter through the main entrance. There is a brief "meet and greet", and then the speaker has the floor. The club welcomes members of the public to the meetings. Lunch is available in the hospital cafeteria. Guests are advised to arrive in the cafeteria well before noon.
