Lynda Aiman-SmithJune 8, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Buy Nothing New…is Nothing New"
Lynda Aiman-Smith and Krista Joslin-Gay will give a brief overview of various movements like simple living, voluntary simplicity, and buying nothing new.
"In 2013 two friends in the Pacific Northwest decided they could work together to build a neighborhood network with the goal of passing along items to each other. Their goal was to enable the larger neighborhood to Buy Less and Share More. Now in 2025, there are Buy Nothing gift economy groups around the globe, with over 7.5 million members. The
internet has made it much easier for members to ask and to give items in these local gift economies," Aiman-Smith said.
But the concept of buying less and sharing more is not new. About every generation, the idea arises again and makes sense to new adherents. In fact, we can go way back in time and find almost the same language and concepts used again and again, as a society becomes more focused on wealth accumulation (which always seems to accumulate to the few, not the many) and people begin to realize that chasing material goods simply does not lead them to long-term happiness.
Lynda Aiman- Smith is a retired academic, who said, "We will also bring in some of the social research that shows how engaging in a gift economy can make everyone involved much happier! And we will discuss current gift exchange networks that make the distribution of sharing and gifting so much easier."
Krista Joslin-GayKrista Joslin-Gay is a mom to three fabulous children and is deeply involved in working to improve the health of kids and the health of our greater community. She is connected with various exchange networks.
There are speakers on the patio if you wish to listen to the service outside.
Childcare is available every Sunday. Zoey Cronin will lead a formal children's program on second and fourth Sundays. This Sunday will be a Children's RE program.
Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.
