Silver City, NM, October 1, 2025----Personal stories of the coming out process will be the focus of the October 7th PFLAG meeting, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan.  The public is invited, and light refreshments will be served.

"Several PFLAG members and officers will share their own stories of coming out as LGBTQ+ at this meeting," says spokesperson Damie Nelson.  "We especially encourage parents and families of LGBTQ+ individuals to attend because their love and support positively affect the coming out process."

The term "coming out" has been described as the process of self-identification and self-acceptance that involves sharing one's true self with others.  It is a very personal and transformative experience for individuals to disclose their sexual orientation and/or gender identity to family, friends and society.  The coming out process can be both challenging and liberating as it often involves navigating various emotions and obstacles, including potential rejection or acceptance from others.  Coming out takes courage, time, thought and planning. Every October, the U.S. observes LGBTQ+ History Month, which includes National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11. The day, celebrated since 1988, honors the significance of coming out or inviting others in and raises awareness about LGBTQ+ rights.

Nelson continued, "PFLAG publishes a variety of booklets designed to inform and educate LGBTQ+ persons and their families.  Those are available to download for free at the PFLAG National website, www.pflag.org .  Our local chapter can also provide free copies of these booklets.  Contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots.
