Broadcasting as KURU 89.1 FM and streaming at KURU891.org, Gila/Mimbres Community Radio will hold its Fall fundraising drive Thursday through Saturday, October 16-18. KURU's Board of Directors announced that once again local donors have stepped up with numerous challenge grants, which listeners will be asked to match with their membership pledges and donations. Donors are invited to visit the station (at 519B N. Bullard, across from the Hub), enjoy light refreshments, and meet volunteers and members of the Board 10am-4pm on all three days of the fundraiser.
Three dozen DJs and program hosts bring local voices and interviews, thoughtfully curated music, as well as nationally and globally syndicated programming. And KURU has recently expanded its Spanish language and Latin music offerings via Raul Turrieta's well-received "Serenata Mexicana," airing on Thursdays 5-6pm. All this goes out to FM listeners across Grant County and beyond, and to those with Internet access anywhere in the world.
"KURU has recently taken the financial risk of increasing the hours per week of our lone employee – Station Manager and Silver City native Doug Snyder," said Shelby Hallmark, KURU Board member. "Doug has greatly expanded our remote broadcasting; started up 'Studio B,' a live music program he produces and then records for future listening; created a new live variety show (to premiere soon); DJed several local groups' events; brought on and trained two volunteer assistant managers; and even fixed the swamp cooler. With the help of our listeners, we can keep this extra firepower going."
KURU has never received government or corporate funding. As a grassroots non-profit organization, Gila/Mimbres Community Radio relies entirely on donations from the community, hence the importance of fundraising events like this one. To join or donate with a credit card, visit www.KURU891.org on the Internet and click the "DONATE" button. Checks payable to GMCR may be mailed to 519-B North Bullard Street, Silver City, NM 88061, brought down to our open house, or dropped through the mail slot if no one is in the office.
Every donation of $25 or more, or a monthly subscription of $5 or more, makes the donor eligible for a T-shirt with a distinctive KURU logo. "We especially encourage listeners who have never donated to give to the station now and join our family of members," Hallmark implored. "We urge all our listeners to invite their friends to engage with the station, enjoy our programs, come down to our open houses, and donate. Now is the time to join together to sustain KURU and keep our community's unique blend of musical entertainment, culture, news, and commentary flowing out to Grant County and beyond.
