Diane LeBlanc will speak on behalf of the Silver City Jacob Bennett Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at the local Rotary meeting on August 12th. She will present a program on "In the Spirit of 1776," the chapter's America 250 project for this year. This project invites participation from children, students and adults in our communities and is free of charge.

"In the Spirit of 1776" unites a time capsule with the concept of a "message in a bottle." The DAR chapter is collecting 1,776 patriotic notes and warm wishes from children, students and adults in our communities. It will continue collecting notes until America's Semiquincentennial celebration in Silver City on July 4th next year, when these notes will be enclosed in a time capsule.

The time capsule will be opened 50 years later at Silver City's Tricentennial event, and each note randomly passed out to people there – a warm wish and message from someone celebrating America's 250th anniversary to someone here in the future celebrating America's 300th.

The National Society DAR was founded in 1890 and incorporated in 1896 by an Act of Congress. It is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was established by Congress in 2016 to plan and orchestrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.

The Rotary Club meets every Tuesday from 12-1 p.m. for lunch in the Silver Bowling Center. There is a brief "meet and greet", a short business meeting and then the speaker has the floor. The club welcomes members of the public to the meetings. Lunch is available in the grill.
