April 20, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Evolution of Selfishness and Empathy in Humans"
Beth Leuck will talk about how these traits evolved in humans.
"Selfishness, concern only for oneself, and empathy, putting oneself in others' shoes, have their roots in evolution. Basic evolutionary principles can be used to explain why they evolved, and evolutionary psychology can help explain how and why they have been maintained in today's society," Leuck said.
"Concepts such biological fitness, individual, kin, and group selection, and the ultimate and proximal causes of behavior will be used to better understand why and how some individuals behave the way they do. Certain tenets of Christianity and other religions have been influenced by the expression of selfishness and empathy in humans," she added.
Beth Leuck is a retired biology professor who has always had an interest in evolutionary biology and animal behavior and the application of both to human behavior. She has taught classes for undergraduate and graduate students, and has given numerous talks to groups about the evolution of human behavior, including a previous talk to the UU Fellowship on the evolution of religions.
