Lake Roberts Day Use Area and Boat Launch, Mesa and Upper End Campgrounds open

Silver City, NM, July 2, 2025—With increased containment established on the Trout Fire and the upcoming holiday weekend, the Gila National Forest has worked with the New Mexico Department of Transportation to reopen New Mexico Highway 15 for improved ingress/egress and adjusted the public safety area closure to allow use of recreational facilities at Lake Roberts. The public is asked to please drive with caution, as firefighters remain active along area roadways.

The new area closure area includes National Forest System lands south and west of New Mexico Highway 35 and east of NM Highway 15, south to the Gila National Forest boundary, as well as the area within the Trout Fire perimeter west of NM Highway 15, from Forest Road 876 (Trout Creek Road) north to the fire perimeter. The boat launch and day use area at Lake Roberts, Mesa Campground, and Upper End Campground are open.

All National Forest System lands within the closure area are closed to public entry, including Allie Canyon Trailhead and trail, Pictograph Canyon Trailhead and trail, Sapillo Group Campground, Skates Canyon (Celebration Camp), Cherry Creek Campground, McMillan Campground, Signal Peak Trailhead, Black Peak CDNST Trailhead, and Arrastra Interpretive Site. The Dragonfly and Fort Bayard area trail systems also remain closed. The updated area closure is available online at Gila National Forest Alerts.

All Gila National Forest offices will be closed Friday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. We hope you have a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend!
