Tree cutting operations may cause temporary delays on Forest Road 209
Reserve, NM, Sept. 19, 2025—The Gila National Forest is working with a permittee to cut and remove hazard trees and conduct a small forest thinning operation along the Frisco Divide Road (Forest Road 209), south of Highway 180, between Reserve and Luna, New Mexico on the Quemado Ranger District. Due to tree felling activities in close proximity to Forest Road 209, travelers may experience short term temporary delays of up to 15 minutes during operations.
Tree harvest operations will occur within approximately 3 miles south of U.S. Highway 180. Operations began on September 16 and may continue for about one month, depending on weather conditions. Signs are posted in the project area and road guards will be in place as needed.
Travelers on the Frisco Divide and on U.S. Highway 180 should expect tractor trailer truck traffic while the permittee is hauling harvested timber. Please maintain awareness, slow down, and keep to the right, especially when approaching blind curves.
The removal of marked, standing dead trees along Forest Road 209 supports public safety for travelers and campers along a public road. The permittee will also harvest designated trees affected by dwarf mistletoe or mountain pine beetle in a small harvest unit at Horse Mesa. The removal of trees affected by insect and disease infestation will help improve the health of residual stand.
