Silver City, N.M. - The Haven Winter Center, which was operating at the former Silver City Recreation Center, has closed due to insufficient staffing and a lack of sustainable funding necessary to continue safe operations, announced Jacqui Olea, acting town manager.

"I want to thank all of the volunteers who've made such a tremendous effort to help people in need," Olea said. "We will be looking at options to upgrade the infrastructure in that building, but as of now we have no option but to close the doors until such a time that we can identify funds for sufficient staff and needed renovations, as well as volunteers."

Former District 4 Town Councilor Guadalupe "Lupe" Cano and her mother, Patricia Cano, were instrumental in getting the shelter opened, Olea added.

"We are so appreciative of the time, effort and care that Guadalupe, Mrs. Cano, and Kate McCarroll have invested to help care for people who are most vulnerable in our community. We are truly grateful for all their hard work."

Olea also thanked State Senator Gabriel Ramos, Representative Luis Terrazas and his Legislative Aide, Bruce Ashburn, for their help in bringing attention to the needs of the unhoused, and organizing a food drive for the center.

"The Town of Silver City remains committed to supporting vulnerable populations, Olea added, and we will continue to work with local nonprofits, service providers, and regional partners to identify alternative resources and long-term solutions. Information about available services and referrals will be shared as they become available. The Town extends its sincere appreciation to the staff, volunteers, partner organizations, and community members who contributed time, resources and support to the Haven Winter Center."
