Silver City is the newest branch of Tree New Mexico (Tree NM), an urban forestry nonprofit that serves communities across the state through large-scale tree planting and tree care programs.
To mark their arrival, Tree NM is launching a name and logo contest to support future initiatives in the area. These efforts will focus on planting trees to combat urban heat island effects, where man-made surfaces like concrete and asphalt absorb and retain heat, leading to significantly higher temperatures in city environments.
Tree NM offers free climate-resilient trees, planting them in front yards with the help of volunteers to provide shade and reduce urban heat island effects. Each tree is monitored for three years to ensure its continued health and growth. The Silver City program is currently seeking street-facing homeowners interested in adopting a tree. Those interested can apply at bit.ly/scadopt.
"Tree NM is incredibly excited to be joining the Silver City community, a place known for its deep environmental values and active volunteer network. The work already being done here, especially through our partners at the Southwest Urban Forestry Project, is inspiring," said Beth Forman, Tree NM Statewide NeighborWoods Director.
Forman added, "We're honored to help build on that momentum by planting residential trees that will beautify neighborhoods and keep Silver City greener and cooler."
Other Tree NM programs have names like "Tree or C" referring to the Truth or Consequences initiative, which has planted over 200 trees in the last two years.
"We're looking for a name and logo that truly reflect the spirit of this program," said Silver City Regional Coordinator Kendra Milligan. "Silver City is bursting with creativity and artistic talent, and we're inviting the community to help shape the identity of this exciting new initiative."
"We tossed around possible names like Silver Citree or Silva City – as silva is Latin for tree," Milligan said.
Deadline for submissions is Friday, Oct. 3, 2025, at 5 p.m. MST. Logos submitted should be creative, simple, memorable, and versatile. All entries must be submitted electronically to Milligan at
