September 14, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Holy Fool Nasreddin"
Lynda Aiman-Smith and David Kent will discuss the spiritual traditions of the Holy Fool.
In many of the world's spiritual traditions we find stories of a Holy Fool – an eccentric individual who turns societal conventions upside down with his/her foolish behavior – who at the same time reveals moral truth. These Holy Fools act as trickster truth-tellers who through their quirky actions expose hypocrisy, promote spiritual enlightenment, and offer truthful (albeit humorous) forms of guidance to us all.
"In this Sunday's program we will explore tales of Nasreddin, the Trickster Holy Fool whose stories started circulating in the Mideast in the13th century. Nasreddin is claimed as their own by Afghans, Iranians, Kurds, Turks, and Uzbeks," said Lynda Aiman-Smith.
Lynda Aiman-Smith worked as a serial small business owner; then a mid-level manager in a Fortune 500 company; and finally as a tenured faculty member in the Poole College of Management in North Carolina State University. She loves living here in Silver City where she volunteers in service to our community.
David Kent worked in libraries for 45 years, including 12 years in Colombia, South America. His major life passions have been pacifism, neo-sannyas, classic salsa music, and Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute. He is now learning to play Hitoyogiri, an almost extinct Shakuhachi played in medieval Japan. He moved from Colombia to Silver City at the end of the last millennium... in 1999.
Childcare is available every Sunday. Zoey Cronin will lead a formal children's program on second and fourth Sundays. This Sunday will be a Children's RE program.
Children are welcome to participate on any Sunday, but they will get the most out of the program if they attend second and fourth Sundays somewhat regularly. Family adults may stay for the children's program or attend the adult program. Children are encouraged to bring a small item that represents someone or something they are grateful for that week.
