February 1, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Silver City Street Outreach"
Brian Stengel will talk about Silver City Street Outreach (SCSO), a grassroots harm reduction and community wellness nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting unhoused and vulnerable residents of Grant County. Founded on principles of compassion, dignity, and recovery-oriented care, SCSO provides year-round outreach services, crisis intervention, and resource navigation for individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges.
The organization operates the Silver City Warming Center, a low-barrier, trauma-informed daytime drop-in shelter that offers a safe, inclusive, and supportive refuge during the coldest months of the year. Beyond basic survival needs, SCSO emphasizes community connection, peer support, and access to recovery and stabilization resources—bridging gaps between street-level realities and long-term wellness.
Brian J. Stengel, LSAA, CPSW, CSW, is a mental health counselor-in-training, harm reduction advocate, and community leader based in Silver City, New Mexico. Drawing from extensive lived experience with both homelessness and addiction, Stengel has dedicated his career to serving unhoused and marginalized populations through a blend of direct service, advocacy, and education.
Since 2016, he has been actively engaged in street outreach and recovery support for the unhoused community of Silver City—most recently as Executive Director of Silver City Street Outreach and Founding Director of the New Mexico Recovery Coalition. His work integrates evidence-based mental health and substance use interventions with a deep commitment to social justice, harm reduction, and systemic reform.
