Creating Characters that Live off the Page: How to Capture Compelling Characters

The workshop will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 10 am - noon, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City, 3845 N Swan St, Silver City, NM.

All fiction writers need to create unforgettable characters. If writers don’t have techniques for developing characters that live off the page, too many will emerge flat and generic, lacking in compelling and memorable traits. Kris Neri will show attendees how to create characters from their deepest cores, through all their layers — characters that seem as unforgettable as real people. She will share basic, intermediate, and advanced techniques to give attendees the best tools t.

The workshop will be equally valuable for memoir and creative nonfiction writers, as it is for novelists and short story writers. Those writing memoirs, historical, and other forms of nonfiction also need techniques to explore the real people they plan to write about.

Baca slash pit near Quemado closed several weeks while ashes cool

Baca pit was burned by fire crews March 28; site closed two to four weeks

QUEMADO, NM, March 29, 2023 – Yesterday the Gila National Forest, Quemado Ranger District burned the Baca slash pit, located approximately 1 mile northeast of Quemado Lake Recreation Area, and 3 miles from Quemado Lake Estates. The site is closed for an estimated two to four weeks while the fuels continue to be consumed and until the ashes cool. Once the site is safe for re-entry, the community slash pit will be reopened for public use.

“The Baca pit is used in partnership with the Catron County Firewise program,” said Quemado District Ranger Randall Chavez. “This valued partnership helps to remove hazardous fuels and vegetation on and adjacent to private lands.”

Light smoke may continue to be visible to the public and may linger in the valley at night and early in the morning.
