Rash of abandoned campfires discovered on Gila National Forest

Ensure campfires are cold to the touch with your bare hand before leaving

SILVER CITY, NM, April 13, 2023 – Recent warmer weather is drawing larger numbers of visitors to the Gila National Forest, as evidenced by the numerous abandoned, smoldering campfires across the forest that were extinguished last weekend by patrolling fire crews. Not only is it illegal to leave a campfire unattended, but unattended fire can easily escape, becoming wildfire.

When you are preparing to leave your campfire unattended, it is vital that you ensure it is completely cold before departure. First, drown the fire, ashes, and coals with water. Next, use a shovel to scrape all partially burned sticks and logs to remove all hot embers, and then stir water, ashes, coals, and soil to wet all contents. Feel the coals, embers, and any partially burned wood with your hands, feeling for heat under rocks and burned materials. Once everything, including the fire ring, is cool to the touch, the fire is safely out.

News from Grant County Community Foundation

Give Grandly 2023 — Saturday, May 6, 2023

We are gearing up for Give Grandly 2023, and it's going to be a great one this year. We have 63 confirmed nonprofits participating—more than any other year—and we can proudly say that we have raised sufficient match funds to guarantee each participating nonprofit who reaches at least $500 in donations an extra $500 in match funds. Thank you to all of the individuals and organizations who contributed to make that possible--you know who you are!

We have a brand new Give Grandly website, with all kinds of bells and whistles, and we can't wait to try it out. Online donations will open on April 22nd and close a month later, on May 22nd. You can donate on the Give Grandly website (www.givegrandly.org) or by filling out the hard-copy donation form and dropping it off at the Grant County Community Foundation offices at 1106 N Pope. Or you can turn up on the day: the Give Grandly in-person event on Saturday, May 6th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the downtown Makers Market.

On May 6, you can give in person to your favorite charities while enjoying the fun, frolics and philanthropy that our fabulous residents are famous for. We'll have music, food, drumming, radio interviews, tons of children's activities—and even activities for adults, including a beer garden—so don't miss out on all the fun. Drop down and find out from our wonderful nonprofit community what they will do with the funds you donate. Every year, they rely on our community's generous donations to keep he lights on, pay the staff, and do all the work that makes our community so vibrant and caring. You can find all the donor and event information you need at www.givegrandly.org!! Tell all your friends, and don't forget to use our social media tag, #givegrandly.
