January 21, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “The Importance of Local News”
Nick Seibel will talk about how local newspapers are being lost on an average of 2.5 per week. More than more than half of USA counties are now “news deserts” or have limited access to reliable local news. With no local newspaper, communities have lower voter turnout, decreased civic engagement, and increased polarization.
Seibel is the publisher of the Deming Headlight and the Silver City Daily Press.

Jason Dea West - poet, songwriter and troubadour
folk, country & western, traditional and alternative
Music: 7:30pm
Jason Dea West is an American troubadour who sings what he lives and lives what he sings. West’s poignant lyrics are brilliantly blended with vintage country, folk and blues, and timely sensibilities. From epic guitar and harmonica instrumentals to humorous song as story, Jason never strays very far from the anarchic punk-folk roots of his beloved former band, Barefoot
Surrender and his celebrated current band, Intuitive Compass. His live “Magnolia Session” via Anti-Corp Records of Nashville, TN placed #15 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts in October 2020. “Jason belongs to the wild lands and what is left of the American countryside… He’s the Troubadours Troubadour” ~ Paul Weir of Flam Chen

Silver City and Quemado ranger districts expecting to implement prescribed fire projects next week
SILVER CITY, NM, January 12, 2024 – Recent and forecast snowy weather is a good indicator that the Gila National Forest will be continuing to burn slash piles at numerous locations across the forest as weather and fuels conditions and resource availability allow.
“Last year, the Gila accomplished more than 153,000 acres of fuels reduction through a combination of prescribed fire, mechanical treatments, and wildfire ignitions managed for resource outcomes. Overall, the Gila produced 37% of the fuels reduction accomplishments reported by the entire Southwestern Region in 2023,” said Gila Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. “The Gila has a long history of leadership in prescribed fire and wildfire use and we will continue to lead now and in the future.”

LORDSBURG- The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) District One will begin Fog Sealing US 70 from milepost 0(Arizona Stateline) to milepost 28(Turnerville) north of Lordsburg.
Fog sealing is a single application of emulsified asphalt to an existing asphalt surface. This type of maintenance treatment can be a valuable aid to renew weathered (oxidized) asphalt surfaces and improve the surface appearance, seal minor cracks, surface voids, and inhibit unraveling. Most importantly, fog sealing helps preserve the underlying pavement structure allowing the roadway to last for many years to come.
