Senate Republican Leader Applauds Trump Administration’s Ongoing Efforts to Improve Public Safety for New Mexicans Under Failed Local Leadership

Santa Fe, NM — Yesterday, President Donald Trump announced expanded efforts to combat cartel activity through the detention and deportation of illegal immigrants. These increased operations are focused on major U.S. cities or municipalities that have taken an oppositional stance to the enforcement of federal law. Also known as “Sanctuary Cities,” New Mexico cities such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces have refused to assist federal law enforcement and therefore are expected to be amongst the targeted locations for these expanded law enforcement operations.

In response to the announcement, Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer (R-Farmington) has issued the following statement:

“This announcement is welcomed by countless New Mexicans who are sick and tired of the failed leadership from radical progressives. The Trump administration has and continues to follow through on its promise of making our communities safer and fighting the cartels head-on.” The Senator continued, “ Despite the local opposition from radical progressive Democrats like Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Mayor Tim Keller, and Mayor Alan Webber, this administration continues to deliver for New Mexicans by targeting drug smugglershuman traffickers, and violent criminals. It’s unfortunate that our state’s local progressive leadership continues to ignore the public safety crisis taking place in our communities. Rather than collaborate with the successful efforts of federal law enforcement, they go a step further by actively opposing operations that make our communities safer. Fortunately, while progressive Democrats try to shield cartels and violent gangs, nothing they do will stop President Trump from delivering on his promise of safer communities for all Americans.”
