Harriet Ella (Bishop) Malott, a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend went to be with the Lord on October 26, 2024, at age 77, with her family by her side following a short illness. She was born on March 3, 1947, to Harold and Ruth Bishop in Lordsburg, NM. She attended Lordsburg Schools all her life and graduated in 1965. She attended college at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM from 1965-1967 where she graduated with her associate's degree in Secretarial Sciences. Thereafter she was employed with Quality Import Company (Maloof Co.) from 1967-1968.
On October 12, 1968, she married Art Malott and lived in Warner Robins Georgia from 1968 to 1970 where Art was stationed. While there, she worked for the Ralston Purina Company until returning to Durango, CO in 1970 so Art could attend Fort Lewis College and work for his dad at the Tri-State Printing Company.
On March 11, 1971, her first daughter Tracy Renee Malott was born in Durango, CO. In 1972, she moved to Lordsburg, NM where Art went to work at Bishop Lumber Company. She also worked there part-time until her second daughter Jennifer Lee Malott was born on November 26, 1974, in Deming, NM.
From 1974-1982 she helped with Brownie and Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, and Epsilon Alpha Sorority. She was also very involved with the church. In 1982, she began working as a secretary for the State of New Mexico Human Services Department in Lordsburg, NM. This office in Hidalgo County closed in 1985 and she was relocated to their office in Silver City, NM where she made the drive back and forth for approximately 23 years until her well-deserved retirement in November 2007. From 1985-2001 she was also able to squeeze in some time to volunteer as an EMT with the Hidalgo County Ambulance serving the needs of the small community.
Harriet was well known for her sense of humor, infectious smile, dancing, clapping and singing whatever came to mind. If there was a song with a specific name in it, she'd sing it to you. She loved to make people laugh and smile.
She had a passion for line dancing and loved going as often as she could. She couldn't wait to show off her "new moves" that she had learned. She also loved to go on cruises and had gone on three cruises with some of her closest friends, and most recently a fourth cruise with her family honoring her late niece, Deena. She loved seeing/visiting new places and was always up for any type of adventure (unless it was too hot or too cold).
Harriet was a gifted pianist, and she loved to play for church or just for leisure. So many were blessed listening to these talents. She didn't always love slow-paced piano pieces, but much preferred to have upbeat, happy songs and may have changed the tempo up a beat or two if it was too slow for her liking. Her favorite music, whether it be piano or just music to listen to were her 50's and 60's songs. You can almost guarantee when you got in the car with her the radio was set to either a Christian station or her 50's and 60's station.
Harriet's love language was sending cards to so many. She would take the time to go pick out a special card for each person for birthdays, holidays, special occasions, or just to let you know she was thinking of you. She would send daily text messages to her daughters around 4:30 pm to give them weather updates, tell them about her day, keep them up to date on their dad and all his busy activities, but mostly to let them know how proud she was of them and to remind them just how much she loved them. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren as she made every effort to attend soccer games, volleyball games, gymnastics meets and any other activity they were involved in. She was truly the brightest light in so many lives.
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Ruth Bishop, in-laws Paul and Ann Malott, niece Deena White, great-nephew Zane Ryan White, and bonus niece Allison Stephens.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Art Malott, and their two daughters Tracy Malott and Jennifer Ellwood (Malott), and son-in-law Chris Ellwood. Her grandchildren Kyle and Ashlyn Ellwood, bonus grandson Josh Gomez, and bonus great-grandchildren Daniel and Eliza Gomez. She has one brother Sam Bishop and his wife Elena of Soquel, CA; her in-laws Wilbur (Web) and Jan Smartnick and Craig and Sandy Wood; nephew Patrick Bishop, and his children, Sam, Bennett, and Grace; niece Jennifer Dianne Bishop and wife Merissa; nephew Mike Smartnick and wife Deborah (Debbie) and their two daughters Jessica and Tara; niece Nancy Middlebrook and husband Gary; niece Caitlin (Caitie) O'Dougherty and son Cael; nephew Jay Wood and wife Laura and daughter Charlotte: great nephew Logan Michael White and wife Jessica; and countless other family members and friends.
