Juan Duran Sr., 99, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Monday, December 15, 2025 at his residence. He was born June 24, 1926 in Silver City, NM to Juran Duran Sr. and Josephina Cook.
With deep love, the family of Juan (John) Duran announces his passing. A proud World War II Navy veteran, he carried the discipline, humility, and quiet courage of his service into every part of his life.
After returning home, he built a respected career as a house painter. His work was known for its precision and care—so much so that even on his days off, people called on him because they trusted no one else. Later, he brought that same dedication to Western New Mexico University, where he became known not just for his craftsmanship but for his reliability, kindness, and steady presence.
A true craftsman at heart, he never stopped creating. Even in retirement, he found joy in woodworking, building furniture with the same hands that once built the family home he provided for his loved ones. That home, made board by board, stands as a testament to his devotion and his belief in taking care of the people he cherished.
Family was the center of his world. He was a devoted brother, husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. His family knew him as the man who showed up, who listened, who fixed what was broken, and who loved without hesitation.
He found peace in the outdoors—fishing, camping, and enjoying the simple moments that made life rich.
He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love, and quiet strength. Those who knew him will carry his memory in the homes he painted, the furniture he built, and the family he shaped with his hands and his heart
He is survived by one daughter, Theresa Duran-Ornelas and husband Joe of Silver City; two grandchildren, Richard Renteria (Chelsea); Amy Tellez (Andy); four great grandchildren, Andres Tellez, Kailana Renteria, Adelyna Renteria, and Adrian Tellez; one sister Carolina Duran Baca of Las Cruces; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Estefanita Jaramillo Duran (3/2025), his brother, Alex Duran; his sister, Helen Genera; his sister in-law, Adelina Duran, and brother in-law, Edward Baca.
He will have a military service at a later date.
