Ramon was part of the first graduating class of Cobre High School. While in high school, he worked as a grocery clerk at his Tia Elisa's store, the US Shopping Center in Vanadium, then later he worked at the Santa Rita Store. Ramon enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in 1954. He later enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1963. Ramon was married to the love of his life Polly Jaramillo Marquez, for 68 years.
They made their family home in Silver City. He was a diesel mechanic by trade, working at Kennecott Copper Mines, Chino Mines, and retiring from Phelps Dodge. Ramon was a devout Catholic. He was a parishioner at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was a devoted servant of God and had great faith in the Lord. He was a Cursillista, and prayed the rosary and watched the mass on television daily. Ramon always gave people his very best. He would always lend a helping hand or give advice to a person in need. Ramon never turned anyone away. The day he passed, Father Oliver went to anoint him at the hospital. Father Oliver told Ramon he was leaving for Nigeria after Christmas, and that it was a very dangerous place. Ramon blessed Father Oliver on his head, with the sign of the cross.
He raised his family to always leave a place better than how they found it. He was very fond of animals and would often ask his children before they would sit down to eat, if they had already fed the family pets. He would say, "They can't talk, they can't tell you they are hungry. Feed them before you eat." Ramon was raised in a musical family and was known for his musical talent. He would sing, play the guitar, piano, and harmonica. Back in his younger days, he would sing "Las Mananitas" on birthdays. He loved family gatherings where he and his siblings could sing together. Ramon was known for his gift of telling a story, a joke, and remembering many, many details, often a sought-after historian of sorts. Many of his friends called him "El Computer" because he remembered nicknames, birthdates, and historical details that most people would forget. He had a charismatic personality, and was a friend to all. Ramon could break the ice with anyone who he crossed paths with. It did not matter the race, ethnicity, or social class. He could find a topic of interest and engage in great conversation. He had the gift of making people smile and laugh. Always quick with a joke and had incredible wit. He would tell his grandkids, "I'll see you in the funny papers". Sometimes his grandkids were faster at making the statement than he was and Ramon would respond with "if I don't see you first." Other favorite phrases included "Kniks Fronz Niks" (which was his way of saying "no sir" or "no way"), "I'm not as old as I look, I'm older", and "I frost my hair to look grown-up". He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite teams; the Dallas Cowboys, LA Lakers, and LA Dodgers.
