The Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Sept. 1, 2022, brought together business owners, local governments, and other stakeholders to recognize some of the outstanding contributions made by community members over the summer. It was also an opportunity to hear President Joseph Shepard brief us on the state of Western New Mexico University, and how we as a community can help the University improve its ability to fulfill its mission.

Chief on Dr. Shepard's agenda was his vociferous support for Bond C."

Approval of Bond C will mean an allocation of $4 million for Western New Mexico University, which will fund the expansion of healthcare training programs. Also, passage of Bond C is estimated to create more jobs in construction and architecture while boosting local economies and gross receipts tax revenue.

In Grant County, WNMU would use GO Bonds to renovate and upgrade its historic Graham Gym and make needed improvements to Old James Road, "an important throughway in the heart of the campus."

The Chamber wished to extend our admiration for Dr. Shepard's efforts on behalf of the university and congratulate the school for working so diligently in its goal to become carbon neutral.

This year's Independence Day Parade saw a return to large, boisterous crowds, a testament to the resilience of Grant County, now that we've broken through the terrible stranglehold of COVID 19. There were so many amazing floats and other attractions in the parade that picking winners was no easy task. Picking up the award for best float was Laura Phelps, on behalf of float sponsor Freeport McMoRan. In the best walking group category, Silver City High School Marching Band took top honors, with Superintendent Will Hawkins accepting the award. And in the Trucks, Cars and Vehicles category, John Griswold took home the hardware.

The weather is still balmy, but winter is just around the corner, and with it comes our Annual Banquet. This year we'll be recognizing community members for their tireless efforts in making Grant County such a wonderful place to live and do business.
