Lujan Grisham's Education Record is Horrendous While New Mexico Remains 50th in Nation in Education
Albuquerque, September 21—New Mexico's education system is the worst in the country, according to U.S News & World Report, Forbes and Wallethub, but a new radio ad has the audacity to falsely claim that Gov. Lujan Grisham's record on education is strong and that she's fighting for students and parents.
The radio spot, released in Spanish, by the American Federation of Teachers and Latino Victory Fund is an absolute falsehood.
Lujan Grisham has consistently failed our students, schools and our state, and the record proves it.
New Mexico is dead last in the nation in education.
The latest test scores, released this month by the Governor's Public Education Department, reveal that 75% of our children are not proficient in math and 66% are not proficient in reading, writing and science. For those in kindergarten to second grade, 69% fell short of the proficiency mark in early literacy.
Numbers don't lie. New Mexico students are among the worst performing students in the nation, and it's the Governor's fault.
Despite spending more than $13 billion on education during her weak tenure, these are the results we are left with. New Mexico's education system is broken.
The Governor has done nothing.
During the pandemic she shut down schools and used her illogical and arbitrary COVID policies to hurt our students via online learning. There were countless absences, students fled to neighboring states where schools were open and, in New Mexico, there was a class divide, as many rural communities had no access to the internet, and students had no computers. Students didn't have equal access to an education as required under the New Mexico Constitution.
"This radio ad is simply a lie. There's absolutely no accountability or organization in this Lujan Grisham administration," said RPNM Chairman Steve Pearce. "It's obvious why we remain 50th in education, and it's no surprise that the Governor has gone through three Education Secretaries. There's chaos in Santa Fe, and it's leading to a crisis in our classrooms; dollars are not going directly to students, and the latest student performance results show what's happening. This is why we must take a stand at the polls this fall and get our education system on a better course."
