CLAY Festival Exhibition Openings At Light Art Space

The following is a list of events scheduled for the CLAY Festival. Artists include George Rodriguez, Marko Fields, Diego Valles, and Mary Fischer. There are several children's events at the WNMU Museum along with a Open House there. 

Shapeshifters: An Exhibition by CLAY Festival Headliner Visiting Artist, George Rodriguez

Location: Light Art Space Gallery

Date: Saturday, July 15, 2023

Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In Shapeshifters, George Rodriguez continues to draw on themes of culture and community. He is exploring historic civilizations, the urban environment, and the monuments we select to represent us. At the opening reception of Shapeshifters and GRACE, George will speak to his artwork as well as his jurying process.

Grace: CLAY Festival 2023 National Juried Exhibition

GRACE in CLAY is juried by the 2023 Western New Mexico University Visiting Artist George Rodriguez. Opening alongside Shapeshifters, the GRACE in CLAY exhibition features ceramic artwork representative of GRACE. As we seek a just and equitable society with compassion and consideration for the world around us, let's consider the idea and the role it can play in our lives.

Embellished Stories: George Rodriguez Workshop

Location: WNMU Francis McCray Art Gallery

Date: Monday, July 10 - Friday, July 14, 2023

Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Bring your imagination to life in this fun sculpture class that encourages embellished storytelling in clay! We will explore narrative vases, wall mounted heads and free-standing sculptures. George will demonstrate continuous hollow construction as well as how to build in sections for smaller kilns or larger sculptures.

Two Friends Under The Influence: Exhibition Opening Reception W/ Marko Fields & Diego Valles

Location: 200 W Market St

This exhibit will feature Marko Fields, an artist currently residing in Minnesota, and Diego Valles, an artist from Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua, Mexico. After becoming close friends through the art industry, Marko and Diego came together for their exhibition titled Two Friends Under the Influence. Taking inspiration from music and nature, Diego brings his expertise in Mata Ortiz style pottery alongside Marko Fields' skill in sculpting, painting and printing on clay. Art from other artists will also be featured in this exhibition.

Printing On Clay: Mary Fischer Workshop

Location: Bear Mountain Lodge

Date: Thursday, July 13 - Saturday, July 15, 2023

Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Use mason stains and slips to learn several different techniques for printing on clay at this workshop, and learn how to make ceramic ink for use for printing etching plates, linoleum blocks and laser photocopies.

WNMU Museum Open House

Location: WNMU Museum

Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Visit the WNMU Museum and experience the rich heritage of the New Mexico Southwest in its historical art, pottery, and artifacts. The exhibit room on the second floor will be open, featuring some of our more famous pieces and newer acquisitions. The artifacts will not be in cases, for a more up-close look. There will also be a hands-on component for stable pieces. Gloves will be provided for those who wish to participate in that portion.

Mary Fischer Exhibition Opening & Artist Talk

Mary Fischer: I make what I do in clay because I want to. Talking about the why and wherefore usually means taking liberties with the truth. What is true one day may not be the next. What you swear by one day, you curse the next. As with all things in nature, a state of flux is the rule and means all is well.
