A Guide to Waterfowl Identification for Beginning and Intermediate Birders
Friday, Feb 9, 2024 • 7:00 pm
Harlan Hall, Room 111; WNMU, Silver City
Karen Beckenbach and Bill Norris will provide an overview of waterfowl identification based on general appearance, behavior and habitat. Although this presentation will focus on tips to geese and duck identification, brief attention may be devoted to identification of swans, greb, coots, loons, and cormorants if time permits.

Post-fire forest restoration: a long-term endeavor
SILVER CITY, NM, January 25, 2024 – In 2023 Gila National Forest took major steps toward restoring trails and watersheds damaged by the Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire of 2012. A fast-moving, lightning-caused fire, it consumed more than 274,000 acres of the Gila National Forest, holding title as New Mexico’s largest wildfire for a decade, until it was surpassed by both the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire and the Black Fire in 2022.

Public meet and greet in Truth or Consequences February 22
TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM, January 17, 2024 – Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes has rescheduled Coffee with Camille for 10:00 a.m. February 22, 2024 at the Truth or Consequences Civic Center, located at 400 West 4th Avenue in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
“I am looking forward to visiting with communities and staff of the Black Range Ranger District next month,” said Gila National Forest Supervisor Camille Howes. “It has been nearly 18 months since I came to the Gila and it has been a whirlwind. I appreciate the opportunity to slow down and engage in open dialogue with local stakeholders about issues of concern to us all.”
Coffee with Camille is a two-hour event for the public to engage with Supervisor Howes for questions and discussion of topics of public interest. AARP Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance for people who need it most. Federal and New Mexico returns are prepared and filed electronically for free. Even if you do not have any withholding or you aren’t required to file a federal return, you might get money back.
Most low-income taxpayers (under $36,000 per year) will qualify for a cash rebate from New Mexico. In addition, seniors over 65 who make less than $16,000 and pay rent or property taxes may qualify to receive rebates of $20 to $350, depending on income level and number of exemptions.
AARP Tax-Aide, in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, will prepare and file Federal and/or New Mexico returns for taxpayers of any age and income level at NO CHARGE, in Silver City and in Bayard.
The program will operate from February 5 through April 10 by appointment only.
