Health Council names Member of the Year

Stoecker was honored for her professional and personal efforts to better the quality-of-life in Grant County.Silver City, New Mexico, August 8, 2013:  Grant County Community Health Council honored Mary Stoecker with the prestigious Member of the Year award for her efforts, professionally and personally, to promote community health.

Health Council Coordinator Tiffany Knauf praised Stoecker's commitment: "Mary has been a great asset to the Health Council and community, and I was overjoyed to see such a deserving individual receive the award this year."

Throughout Stoecker's 25-year career with the New Mexico Department of Health's Regional Health Promotion Team, she has worked across the spectrum of public health issues in Grant County.  She helped secure initial funding for Corre Caminos Transit and continues to serve on the Southwest Regional Transit District.  She worked with the Grant County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Taskforce coordinating community trainings and policy changes to help domestic violence victims receive services.  She has served on numerous boards and collaborative councils over her career.


Health Council Child Care sector representative, Terry Anderson, noted that Stoecker "facilitated the creation of the Life Cycles." The Life Cycles were the Health Council's original community groups that resulted from the first community assessment and worked on age-specific issues. The Life Cycles secured initial funding for the Family Support Centers and the Volunteer Center in Grant County. The Senior Life Cycle continues to meet monthly.

Currently, Stoecker spearheads the Fitness and Nutrition in the Community (FANC) work group for the Health Council, which has promoted the 5210 Fitness Challenge in the community. Stoecker also coordinates FANC's efforts to track the Body Mass Index of public school children. The resulting data secured $360,000 in funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for Grant County Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities.  Stoecker has also been a long-time advocate for expanding regional drug and alcohol treatment services with the Behavioral Health Local Collaborative 6 and the Continuum of Care Coalition.

Stoecker said, "I'm honored, and I have enjoyed working with the Health Council for many years." Stoecker aided in the formation of the Grant County Community Health Council in her role with the New Mexico Department of Health. She has represented the Public Health sector on the Health Council for more than 13 years.

Health Council Chair, Priscilla Lucero said, "Mary contributes so much to so many organizations in the region. She brings an awareness of a variety of efforts in the community to the Health Council.  Her contributions are to the point and helpful."
