Eileen Piercy, third-grade teacher at José Barrios Elementary School in Silver City was the 1st Place Winner of the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizen Education Award for VFW Post 3347 in Arenas Valley and District 4. District 4 is made up of Posts from Elephant Butte, Williamsburg, Hatch, Lordsburg, and Arenas Valley.
Olga Ray wrote the sponsor letter detailing why Piercy should win the award. Piercy also received certificates from the Post & D4 along with a "crystal apple" 1st Place award plaque from District 4. Certificates were also given to Ray and Jose Barrios Elementary for honoring Eileen Piercy.
VFW Post 3347 is proud to honor America's teachers, Grades K-12. The Smart/Maher VFW National Citizen Education Teacher Award recognizes teachers who care about America.
The post said the community needs to honor those teachers who are deeply concerned about America and its children. The teachers concerned about the perpetuation of America's noblest traditions and highest ideals. Prime candidates for this award are teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly, and who promote America's history and traditions effectively, along with civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism.
