According to scanner chatter, a grass and brush fire that started around 2 p.m. is currently burning in the ditch behind the Gardens on Pine Street near Maple and Silver streets. Silver City Fire Department is on scene assisted by, at least, the Whiskey Creek, Tyrone and Pinos Altos volunteer fire departments. Also, a helicopter may be called to assist. Firefighters were advised to keep looking up. A staging area for personnel and equipment has been set up at the R&L parking lot. Silver City Police Chief Freddy Portillo told the Beat that the fire may be partially contained, but he is awaiting percentage figures. He said that four officers are on scene.
The fire appears to be moving west toward Silver and Birch streets and may be endangering homes and backyards. Streets, including Silver Street and Kimberly Drive have been blocked to traffic in the vicinity of the fire.
Weather is warm and windy. No evacuations have been announced.
