All furloughed employees from Chino operations have been contacted by Freeport-McMoRan. The good news is that the total workforce will have about 600 employees to fit the mine's revised plans. Operations will resume at a reduced rate of about 50 percent capacity.
Of course, good news usually is balanced with bad news and as of today, Jan. 19, 2021, a reduction in force will hit about 240 employees.
But Freeport won't leave their laid off workers in the lurch. The company will assist those laid off by partnering with local resources, such as Western New Mexico University, Workforce Solutions and CO.STARTERS, as well as informing the workers of job openings at other Freeport sites in North America. These options can provide potential career alternatives.
With copper prices somewhat improved, market volatility remains. The company continuously monitors economic conditions and does not anticipate a change to operating plans or an increase in staff levels in the immediate future.
The company continues to be a committed community partner and will seek ways to collaborate to bolster resiliency in the Grant County community.
As for the Tyrone Mine, operations continue there as they have for the past months. Things are stable with around 300 employees.
