Location of Origin: North of Mimbres, NM near the Gila National Forest
Start date: April 22, 2022 – 4:07 p.m. MST
Size: Approximately 100 acres
Percent Contained: 10%
Cause: Under Investigation
Resources Assigned: 53 personnel

Closures: None

Safety: Please use extreme caution when using a source of spark or fire. With very low humidity and gusty winds, any new wildfire start can grow very quickly.

Cooperators: Grant County Fire Volunteer Fire Departments; Mimbres Volunteer Fire Department

TODAY

Today's work will be focused on constructing additional containment lines and mopping up. Fire managers expect gusty winds but feel the existing and other containment lines will keep the fire's growth to a minimum. However, isolated tree burning will lead to visible smoke in nearby communities.

Tonight

Firefighters will monitor and patrol overnight to ensure the fire stays within containment lines and look for opportunities to fight the fire directly.

WEATHER

Today will be slightly cooler, with humidity dropping into the single digits. Winds will be lighter and out of the southwest to the west today and shifting to the northwest tonight. On Sunday, seasonal temperatures will remain, and winds will lower.

EVACUATION ALERTS

None

SUMMARY:

Forty-five firefighters from the Gila National Forest responded to the East fire when it was reported on April 22 at 4:07 p.m. local time. It is located south of Hicks Cemetery near the town of Mimbres and Hwy 35. It initially started on private land but has moved quickly across and into the jurisdictional forest boundary.
