Here is an update on all the group's happenings

1. The Store:

It Takes a Village is undergoing a reorganization of the store as it has gotten a ton of new books and merchandise in. A Grant proposal that could definitely spice things up is under development. Because of this and the increased work to create a safe space for the homeless, It Takes a Village will be closed until Tuesday, Sept. 1. Management apologizes for any inconvenience, but promises to be an even greater resource when it reopens. Drop donations of books outside if no one is in the store or bring them into the store if someone is.

2. Homelessness Project Update:

A. It Takes a Village has worked with the Town Manager and the Chief of Police, and they have agreed to allow the homeless to stay in the Big Ditch in the area from Broadway to the Bridge. They had been doing sweeps every 12-24 hours before, kicking them out and often emptying their bags. This is a very temporary fix, but is a small improvement.

B. It Takes a Village has created a draft of a survey to help it gauge the ideas that the people of our community have about homelessness. This is expected to be finalized at Thursday's Meeting.

C. It Takes a Village is seeking a name for the Homelessness Project, and has received many ideas on this. This is also expected to be finalized on Thursday.

D. Once the name for the project has been selected on Thursday, a Facebook Page/Group will be started for it. Jason Burke will send out the link in next week's email so everyone can join the group in support of the project.

E. It Takes a Village is putting together a list of possible business supporters for this project and is looking for suggestions.

F. It Takes a Village is still considering sites for a permanent safe space. It has a list of City and County owned properties. Suggestions are appreciated.

G. Though not specifically a part of the project, management is planning to provide additional services for the homeless at It Takes a Village. More on that coming soon.

3. Upcoming Events:

A. Outreach Subcommittee Meeting-Wednesday, August 26, at 5PM at It Takes a Village. Join the talk about how to engage the community in terms of the homelessness project.

B. Community Dinner-Wednesday, August 26, at 6PM at It Takes a Village. The first two weekly dinners have been a huge success. Join for great food and conversation. Bring a dish if you can. Lots of food is donated from local restaurants as well as the dishes the locals bring.

C. Homelessness Project Committee Meeting-Thursday, August 27, at 6PM at the New Church of the SW Desert (on Bennet St, behind Food Basket)- It Takes a Village management will address all the topics mentioned in the Project Update above and many more.

4. It Takes a Village always needs volunteers and book or monetary donations. Volunteers for the store are in VERY short supply, now that work on homelessness has really kicked into gear, so please give a few hours of your time each week if you can.
