The Silver City Food Co-op Market Café is currently showing the photographic art of Pud Franzblau. Franzblau will be available Saturday, September 19, from 1 pm to 3 pm to discuss his photography.

Franzblau states, "In 1984 after years of studying science and eventually earning a Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry, I bought my first camera. Knowing I wanted to be a photographer I have since carried my photo gear wherever I go. At the end of each journey I retreat to my darkroom to produce photos of the truest and best quality. Though I was initially attracted to the colorful canyons, Anasazi ruins and ancient rock art of the Four Corners region, I have since traveled extensively to the entire western United States, Canada, Baja California and Australia.

"My vast experiences with science have contributed to my deep understanding of light, optics and the chemistry involved in the darkroom, and this knowledge has enabled me to teach myself photography. I've always produced color photographs and to this date have never made a black and white image. I have, though, taken thousands of black and white photos and intend to print them.

"Unlike computer generated and mass produced photographs, I do all of my printing in my darkroom using the Ilfochrome (formerly Cibachrome) process, which is no longer available. Each photograph is an individual artistic creation, frequently taking hours to produce. Ilfochrome has the most stable dyes and renders the brightest and most saturated colors of all the types of color photographic prints, so that even after a century of being displayed, its colors do not fade. The profound natural light exhibited for moments in nature allows me to take all my photos without any artificial lighting or color filters. Although there is no substitute for experiencing nature, viewing a scene that existed for a split second is not just a re-creation of the original but often has a dynamic all its own.

"In addition to having my own gallery, my photographs have been exhibited in dozens of galleries and shows throughout the western United States.

"I currently teach chemistry and physics at Western New Mexico University and live in Silver City with my wife, Nan, and daughter, Phoebe."
