FreshRx, the New Mexico Farmers' Marketing Association’s (NMFMA) statewide produce prescription program, is available in Grant County through the partnership with Hidalgo Medical Services Silver City.

The FreshRx program provides food vouchers to participating health clinics to allocate to over 400 patients who would benefit from having increased access to eat more nutritious, New Mexico-grown produce. Many of the patients may be facing food insecurity and/or diet-related illness, such as diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension. The patients can use FreshRx food vouchers to purchase in-season fruits and vegetables and are encouraged to shop at their local farmers’ market, or to enroll in their local community supported agriculture farms (CSAs). The vouchers are region-specific and have markets, with opening days and times, listed on the back of the voucher.

Addressing chronic health issues and food insecurity, while supporting local and sustainable agriculture, is the goal. FreshRx is a partnership between the NMFMA, federally qualified health clinics, farmers’ markets, and CSAs across the state.

Funding for FreshRx is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Grant Program (GusNIP).

In total, 15 clinics across the state are participating in the following counties: Bernalillo, Doña Ana, Grant, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Socorro, Taos, and Valencia. The program is grounded in the idea that food is medicine and in the conviction that everyone has the right to access high-quality, healthy food.
