NMSU's new Patent & Trademark Center will serve entire state, El Paso

New Mexico State University will house a Patent & Trademark Resource Center starting Sept. 21.

The office will open at Zuhl Library through the United States Patent & Trademark Office's national program in order to give the general public the opportunity to receive patent help and information.

The opening of the resource center is important for the state of New Mexico. Currently the closest resource center is in Phoenix, Arizona. Essentially, this new center at Zuhl Library will serve the whole state of New Mexico and El Paso.

With the opening of this center, there will be a daylong seminar in Milton Hall, Room 85. "Patents & Trademarks: Get the Information You Need to Protect Your Intellectual Property," will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. just in time for the 4:40 p.m. ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:40 p.m. Sept. 21.

The seminar will cover patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. Participants will learn how to do power searching using United States Patent Office Patent and Trademark Databases. A panel will present local resources.

Speakers for the seminar will include M. Neil Massong and Tom Turner, librarians for the USPTO Patent and Trademark Resource Center Program in Alexandria, Virginia. Both arrive with the experience of being involved with the USPTO.

The role of the center would be in assisting the public in searching patent and trademark information. The PTRC library staff is trained on the use of search tools to access this information. They provide the public with assistance that does not exist with any website in order to find the information small businesses and inventors need to protect their intellectual property.
