Mixed Memories opens at The Tang Gallery

Events & Openings
Sense of Place Gallery wants you to make a date with the beauty of Arizona! Stop by 63C Brewery Ave during the artwalk to experience first-hand the beautiful selection of dramatic, vibrant landscapes created by Bisbee artist Pierre Modena.

“Mixed Memories,” a one-man exhibition of work by Peter Kuttner opens at the Tang Gallery on Saturday, February 10th. "When I'm painting, I tend to yield to the spontaneous development of the artwork. I allow gravity and evaporation to become my allies in creating each piece. The ethereal quality of my work is created one thin layer at a time with great care and patience."

Peter Kuttner graduated with his Bachelors of Fine Art from Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest Magazine as well as in popular films and television shows including Two and a Half Men, Californication, and Nashville. He has recently had solo shows at Kelsey Michael's Fine Art Gallery in Laguna Beach, California, Spectrum Miami, the Architectural Digest Home Design Show and the ArtExpo show in New York. Presently his work is on display in museums and private and corporate collections worldwide.

"The heart of my life and work is conservation. I try to create Zero-waste art. The layers of archival materials in the Mixed Tapes series can resemble sedimentary geological formations. Each layer of tape comes from a different painting, project, or point in time. It is the mixed memory of these pieces that gives them the complexity reminiscent of the natural world. In my Cut-Out series, I use a process not unlike that of Matisse. The economy of design and the utilitarian simplicity allow for the creation of simple, archetypal pieces. Using negative shapes and emphasizing spatial relations, I carefully consider scale and balance. Works in this series are meant to be lively, colorful, utopian, and uplifting. It is in these works where I feel most connected to my background in art and design."

A reception for the Peter Kuttner will take place from 4 to 7 pm during the Bisbee After 5 artwalk at 32 Main Street in Old Bisbee.

Barbara Peabody's vibrant Bisbee landscapes
Metalmorphosis is hosting a reception for Tucson artist Barbara Peabody from 5 to 8 pm. In her Artist’s Statement, Peabody asserts that “Art reflects our internal worlds: our dreams, nightmares and thoughts, and our external worlds: society, culture, environment, politics and our personal reactions to them. Color is the foremost factor in my reactions to both worlds through my painting and my photography. Whether my subject matter is the human face or form, unusual architecture, landscape, or simply abstract, color and its relationships to the subject are my primary passion.”
In the past, I have worked in acrylic, oil, watercolor, woodcut prints, wood engravings, ink and pencil drawings and ceramics. An artist learns something useful with each new medium performed. Presently, I prefer using watercolor or thickly-applied oil paints; the latter I apply to black canvas, working “into” the background instead of “onto.”

Meet Barbara and view her paintings of Bisbee -- brightly colored with thick impasto on black canvases during the artwalk at Metalmorphosis, located at 79 Upper Main Street.

“Make a Date” with your favorite President.” The Presidential Collection is a series of colorful oil portraits of every President of the United States from George Washington to Donald Trump. Portrait artist, John Thamm, completed the 44 paintings in Fall, 2017 and is displaying the entire collection in honor of Presidents Day this February in Bisbee. The work is on display at the JF Thamm Gallery at 40 Main Street in Bisbee, AZ from February 1 – March 10. The opening reception is Second Saturday, February 10 from 5 to 7 pm.

“My mother was a school teacher and when I was four years old she would read to me from a small book called “Presidents of Our United States.” I was fascinated by their biographies and loved looking at their portraits. Several years ago, I found that book and decided to work on a project to paint the Presidents that have been in office since I was born in 1937. Once completed, I launched into painting all the Presidents starting with George Washington. Using old black and white photographs and sepia toned paintings as studies of their faces, I painted them in vibrant color to bring them to life.” The show appeals to history buffs and art enthusiasts alike. Families enjoy coming into the gallery and challenging each other to name the Presidents. Thamm discovered that while painting each portrait, he would immerse himself in learning about the life and time that each President served in office. He found the process to be an exciting way to re-learn American History.

John F. Thamm is an accomplished portrait and landscape painter who taught painting workshops in the United States, Netherlands and Berlin, Germany. He spends his winters in Bisbee painting its unique urban and desert landscapes, but his passion is for portraiture. His book, published in June 2010 “Vets: Fifty Portraits of Veterans and Their Stories” features area servicemen and women from every branch of the armed forces who fought in wars from World War II to Iraq. John set up an easel in the lobby of the Spokane Veterans Medical Center and painted the veteran’s portraits and recorded their stories.

John received his undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Idaho and studied portraiture at the Arts Students league in NYC with Samuel E Oppenheim. He was also a courtroom sketch artist for federal trials in the 1990’s such as Ruby Ridge, Waco and the Aryan Nations. J.F. Thamm Gallery is open every day from 10:00am – 5:00 pm at 40 Main Street in Bisbee, Arizona. 509-868- 7434 www.jfthammgallery.com
