Morphy Lake State Park reopens for day-use access following improvement projects

Santa Fe, NM: The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department State Parks Division is pleased to announce the reopening of Morphy Lake State Park following extensive upgrades to improve the visitor experience and protect the natural environment. Located in Mora county, the park is now open for day-use access.

The park was closed for an extended period for major renovation projects. While the park was closed a dam renovation project was completed by the Acequia de la Isla and La San Jose Community Ditch Associations. The State Parks Division also made significant renovations to visitor facilities, including the installation of a hiking trail around the lake, more spacious campsites with new amenities, additional day use parking, an extended boat ramp and new boat dock, improved roadways, erosion control, a campground host site, a new entrance, and new vault toilets. “We think our visitors are going to like the new look and layout of the park,” said Morphy Lake State Park Superintendent Chris Vigil. 

“After years’ worth of effort of the Acequia de La Isla and Acequia de La San Jose, the renovation of Morphy Lake Dam has been completed,” said Harold J. Trujillo, 3rd Generation President of Acequia de La Isla. “Efforts to build this dam started in the 1880’s when our grandfathers and fathers worked on building and expanding the dam. We thank the New Mexico Legislature for their support in renovating the dam. This will help our farmers and our local businesses.”

“I can’t wait for the public to see the improvements made at Morphy Lake State Park,” said State Parks Division Director Christy Tafoya. “The new trails, facilities, and water access are key upgrades that will benefit visitors and protect our natural resources.”

“Completing the dam and opening Morphy Lake State Park will provide good camping and fishing for visitors. We would like to thank our state senators and representatives for their support” added Joe Pacheco, President Acequia de La San Jose. “We are hopeful that all visitors will enjoy and take special care of the improvements and facilities for all to enjoy for future generations,” stated Darrell E. Herrera, 3rd Generation Secretary of the Acequia De La San Jose.

The park will initially reopen for day-use access only with overnight camping to follow later in the season. Day-use fees are $5 per vehicle and provide access from 6:00 am – 9:00 pm. 

An official ribbon cutting celebration will take place once it is deemed safe for crowds to gather.

Visitors are encouraged to check weather conditions prior to visiting as Morphy Lake is situated in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and inclement weather and hazardous driving conditions may exist. The public is reminded to adhere to guidelines in the most current Public Health Order including social distancing, wearing face masks, and adhering to mass gathering limits.
