Students, potential hires can find opportunities with JTIP-eligible employers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The first-of-its-kind Central New Mexico STEM and Manufacturing Hiring Event will provide opportunities for both employers and job seekers to find an employment match with a company ready to create jobs and expand its payroll, New Mexico Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes announced today.

The hiring fair is a collaboration between the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP), Central New Mexico Community College (CNM), New Mexico Workforce Connection, STEM Boomerang New Mexico, and Workforce Connection of Central New Mexico (WCCNM).

“This hiring event will leverage the resources of our state agencies, the private sector, and higher education to match potential hires with the growing industries in New Mexico that are diversifying our economy and supporting families with higher-paying jobs,” Cabinet Secretary Keyes said.

“By working together with other entities, we can attract more potential hires and help grow these industries within New Mexico.”

The event will take place on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, from 9am – 2pm, at CNM – Smith Brasher Hall, 717 University Blvd SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106. The event is the first to showcase companies that are receiving EDD grants from the Job Training Incentive Program, which reimburses employers for training new workers or retraining existing workers for a job with higher pay. Companies typically have six months from the time of a JTIP award to fill the job.

Unless already approved by JTIP, companies attending must apply by completing the Eligibility Questionnaire found on the JTIP web page at EDD.NewMexico.gov/JTIP. Businesses must also register to attend the event by April 28 at EDD.NewMexico.gov/hiring-event.

Though not required, job seekers may choose to register as well on the hiring event web page in order to speed up their check-in process and have their profile set up in advance with the New Mexico Workforce Connection. Job seekers can register any time before the event date.

“This is a great event to highlight STEM jobs and the industries that are important for the New Mexico economy,” New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions Deputy Secretary Marcos Martinez said. “The friendly staff at each New Mexico Workforce Connection Center across the state are committed to assisting individuals looking to explore a career path, connect with the tools to upskill, and to place individuals in long-lasting careers in technology, manufacturing, healthcare, and biotech.”

“The Workforce Connection of Central New Mexico’s can’t express enough the importance of our collaboration with the STEM and Manufacturing event,” Arthur Martinez, Workforce Administrator, Workforce Connection of Central New Mexico, said. To increase the workforce potential for the Manufacturing Industry and those requiring STEM skills is vital to the economic future of the Central Region and New Mexico. Therefore, the WCCNM will continue to invest and work diligently to meet the workforce demand for these businesses.”

At the event, companies will find job seekers to fill positions eligible for JTIP funds. Many businesses in the STEM and manufacturing fields have received approval for funds to assist them in training new employees, but often these jobs have remained unfilled. By inviting job seekers with divergent backgrounds and experience to learn more about these opportunities, the event seeks to boost employment and company expansion within New Mexico.

“CNM is excited to be partnering with the Economic Development Department’s JTIP program in connecting regional businesses with the skilled workforce they need to grow and accelerate economic development in our state,” CNM President Tracy Hartzler said. “This event is a great opportunity for CNM students and graduates to find great career pathways with growing businesses that are committed to the success of their employees and our communities.”

"STEM Boomerang is excited to partner on the STEM and Manufacturing Event on May 10 alongside EDD, CNM, and WCCNM. We are particularly grateful to be included with such great community-support organizations and colleges. New Mexico students and professionals often find challenges navigating the job market in New Mexico," Monica Sandoval-Johnson, Co-Founder STEM Boomerang, said. "This is especially true for candidates with highly technical backgrounds in STEM and manufacturing. That is why this hiring event is so important and timely in helping our professionals find great jobs and stay in New Mexico!"

The event will showcase a wide array of Central New Mexico employers hiring at all education and skill levels. Organizers recommend that job seekers dress professionally and bring plenty of printed resumes. Some employers will be available to conduct onsite applicant interviews.
