Three new exhibitions in Devasthali Hall at New Mexico State University will feature works by both Bachelor of Fine Arts students and Master of Fine Arts students.
“Epic Coalescence,” “Sneak Peek” and “Echoes of an Empty Space” will share an opening reception at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 28 at the UAM inside Devasthali Hall near the intersection of University and Solano. The reception is free and open to the public.
Both the “Epic Coalescence” and “Sneak Peak” exhibits will be open until May 13 and “Echoes of an Empty Space” will be on display until May 20.
“Epic Coalescence” will feature the works of Bachelor of Fine Arts students Zoe Barnes, Jeffery P. Colin, Emily Fernandez, Stefanie Gutierrez, Victoria Hubbard, Olivia Juedeman, Amber Martinez, Joseph Reser and Madylyn Stine in the Mullennix Bridge Gallery and the Bleachers, both located on the first floor of Devasthali Hall.
The exhibit explores the relationship between identity and environmental factors. Various materials and processes are used in this exhibit to illustrate social themes present in the environment, identity, family and mental health.
“Sneak Peek,” presented in the Serafino Collaboration Space on the second floor of Devasthali Hall, gives a glimpse into the upcoming thesis work by current capstone undergraduate students.
Featuring works from Bobbie Montez Larez, Evelynn Lopez, Natalie Morales, Susana Campos and Yunnel Acevedo, the exhibit features concepts surrounding identity and how environments influence perspectives. The exhibits include photography, charcoal drawings and other materials.
“Echoes of an Empty Space” will feature work from NMSU Master of Fine Arts candidates Ashley Diane Saldana, Yashoda Latkar and Gus (Gustavo Ramirez). The artwork pulls together thoughts, ideas, and experiments surrounding connectivity and identity made during their time at NMSU into a singular exhibition.
Saldana uses her field-based practice to orient herself in spaces of solitude as a means of exploring human connection, materiality and time. Latkar’s multimedia creations are focused on the experience of living in an in-between space, belonging ‘nowhere,’ and the tension between ‘here’ and ‘there.’ Gus challenges the binaries within gender, cultural identity, religion and queerness through an interdisciplinary practice.
“Echoes of an Empty Space” will feature community programming along with the exhibition. Latkar will give a performance during the opening night at 6 p.m. Friday, April 28. Saldana will lead a “Nature and Art Walk” from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29 starting at La Llorona Multi-Use Path Trailhead. The nature walk will be followed by an artist walk-through at the UAM with all three artists at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Gus will host a “Behinds the Scenes: Tips and Tricks for Everyday Drag” event at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at the UAM.
