Press Event to Showcase State Auditor’s New Financial Compliance Assistance Program for Local Public Bodies

State Auditor Joseph Maestas is pleased to announce a press event showcasing Office of the State Auditor’s innovative program aimed at assisting local public bodies (LPBs) such as acequias and land grant associations in achieving compliance with state financial reporting laws. The event will be held at 10 a.m. August 1, 2023, in Chimayo, New Mexico.

All public entities, including LPBs, are restricted from accessing capital outlay funding until they are up to date with their financial reporting requirements to the Office of the State Auditor.

The State Auditor's new program represents a significant step toward ensuring accountability and transparency in local governance. By providing accelerated, direct assistance, the program enables local public bodies to meet the financial compliance requirements needed to receive previously-awarded and new Capital Outlay.

During the event, the Auditor will unveil the program's key features and outline the support mechanisms available to local public bodies. This initiative trusts and strengthens financial management practices, enhances public trust, and promotes responsible use of taxpayer funds across the state.

“The overall goal is to have all LPBs that are registered with the Office of State Auditor get compliant by the end of fiscal year 2026,” Auditor Maestas said, “which will allow them to access all public funding in a timely manner and remain financially compliant.”

Members of the press, government officials, stakeholders, and the public are cordially invited to attend this press event and learn more about the State Auditor's program. The event will feature a presentation by Auditor Maestas and a question-and-answer session for attendees to engage with the State Auditor and gain deeper insights into the program's objectives and implementation strategies.
