NMSU ranks among 2024 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Programs

New Mexico State University’s online campus, NMSU Global, has been recognized this year in the U.S. News & World Report Best Online Programs rankings.  

NMSU Global earned multiple spots on the 2024 list of online programs, including an overall ranking of 150 out of 358 universities.  

The online programs that earned rankings include NMSU’s master’s in criminal justice (tied for 43), MBA (tied for 124), bachelor’s programs overall (tied for 150), bachelor’s programs for veterans (tied for 81), bachelor’s degrees in business (tied 44), master’s degrees in education (tied 227), master’s degrees in computer information technology (ranging from 72 to 93), and master’s degrees in engineering (ranging from 86 to 11).

NM records 89 emergency visits and one fatality due to carbon monoxide poisoning

Health officials stress the importance of recognizing symptoms and adopting prevention measures

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) is alerting the public to an increase in carbon monoxide poisoning cases as temperatures decline, and snowfall in northern and central mountains is occurring. Hospital emergency departments have observed a rise in carbon monoxide-related visits since fall 2023, demanding urgent attention and heightened awareness.

Governor appoints Brig. Gen. Jamison Herrera

HerreraJGovernor appoints Brig. Gen. Jamison Herrera as new Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary 

SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham appointed Brig. Gen. Jamison Herrera as Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS). Herrera has served as the Acting Secretary of the department since September of last year, while concurrently holding the position of Deputy Adjutant General for the New Mexico National Guard.

“Secretary-designate Herrera has already proven his dedication to military service throughout his more than 34 years in the New Mexico National Guard,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “With his extensive military experience, he is well-positioned to advocate for and address the challenges faced by veterans and their families and make sure they receive the services they deserve.”

NMSU’s Research and Creativity Week to showcase variety of disciplines

New Mexico State University’s Research and Creativity Week, initiated in 2019 and now in its second year as a springtime event, continues to grow in its offerings and appeal.

This year’s Research and Creativity Week will take place Feb. 26 to March 1 at a variety of locations on and off campus, and will kick off with an opening keynote speech by El Paso-born artist Celia Álvarez Muñoz titled “Why you shouldn't make Art in your Kitchen,” from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts, 1000 E. University Ave. A reception will follow the speech at the University Art Museum, 1308 E. University Ave., from 7 to 8 p.m.

Film festival to honor Golden Globe-winning actor with outstanding achievement award

The Las Cruces International Film Festival selected Golden Globe-winning actor Ron Perlman to receive its “Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment” award at this year’s festival. The ninth annual LCIFF, April 3-7, is supported by New Mexico State University and Visit Las Cruces.

“Ron Perlman is a legendary actor known for his historic roles in “Sons of Anarchy” and “Hellboy,” said LCIFF founder and executive director Ross Marks. “His outstanding and diverse body of work is simply impressive. He is the consummate actor whose values and work ethic reflect the film festival. It is a thrill the festival can honor him in person, and we are beyond ecstatic to have him as the face of the 2024 film festival.”

ENMU Announces Continued Enrollment Growth for Spring 2024

PORTALES, NM – Feb. 6, 2024 – Eastern New Mexico University released enrollment data on Friday, Feb 2. 2024; the results showed continued enrollment growth on the main campus, with spring enrollment up 5.4% over spring 2023

Numbers have increased in every category from spring 2023. Undergraduate enrollment numbers are at 3,759 students, a 5.8% increase from spring 2023, with student credit hours at the undergraduate level increasing by 5.8%.  ENMU also saw a 7.7% increase in transfer students from spring 2023 to spring 2024.

Supreme Court orders a new trial in an eviction case because no audio or written record was made of the proceeding

SANTA FE – The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court must create a record of all civil proceedings when the law designates it as a “court of record” rather than doing so only upon the request of a litigant, the state Supreme Court ruled today.

The justices unanimously concluded that certain Metropolitan Court practices “impermissibly conflict” with state law because its procedural rules required the parties to ask for the creation of a record, otherwise no record was made.
