NMSU math professor uses NSF grants to support research, student success

Mountain-climbing and mathematics may not seem to have much in common, but New Mexico State University graduate student Aaron Stewart made the connection thanks to his mentor NMSU mathematical sciences professor Prasit Bhattacharya.

“Dr. Bhattacharya has compared mathematics with my favorite pursuit outside of school, alpinism, also known as mountain climbing,” Stewart said. “It's an apt analogy in a lot of ways. To climb a route no one has climbed before involves more failure than success, more struggle than ease and more restless nights than easy years. When you hear about the achievement, however, you only hear about the story of success. I think being effective at mathematics requires understanding that.”

NMSU animation program ranking moves up among top 20 nationwide

Mariana Morales had put her hopes of a career in the film industry on hold after high school because of the high cost of college. Now 34, as a senior graduating from New Mexico State University’s top-ranked animation program, Morales has the skills to help her pursue her dream job.

“When I was at a point in my life where I felt I needed to reach for this dream again, I came across NMSU’s Creative Media Institute animation program and thought that this was my second chance,” Morales said. “It opened a floodgate of rediscovering my love for art and teamwork.

NMSU Board of Regents March 11, 2024 regular meeting

The Board of Regents of New Mexico State University will hold a regular meeting at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, in the Regents Room of the Educational Services Building on the NMSU Las Cruces campus. SANTA FE, N.M. – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is set to review a bipartisan-sponsored bill granting the New Mexico Livestock Board (NMLB) authority over meat and poultry inspections in the state. Inspections conducted and certifications issued by NMLB would be equivalent to or greater than those given by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Portales, NM – February 26, 2024 – The ENMU Department of Music presents the musical “Once Upon a Mattress” Friday, March 1-Saturday, March 2, with both showings at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall of the Music Building. 

"Our telling of the classic Princess and the Pea fairytale is filled with joyous make-believe, hilarity, and a touch of heartfelt authenticity,” said Marie Smithwick, Assistant Professor of Voice and Stage Director of the Performance. “The students and faculty of the ENMU Department of Music have worked tirelessly to bring you this show. ENMU Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking “Native Gardens”

Eastern New Mexico University Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking Presents a Theatrical Performance of “Native Gardens.”

Portales, NM – February 23, 2024 – The ENMU Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking presents at the theatrical performance of the play “Native Gardens” Thursday, Feb. 29-Saturday, March 2 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. at the University Theatre Center Main Stage. 

“Collaborating with our set and lighting designer, Joe Thompson, and the talented actors Santiago Chacon, Isabel Juarez, Lowell Irby, Bee Cotton, Israel Stacy, Julie Poole, and Ezequiel Barraza, has been a pleasure,” said Anne Beck, Professor of Theatre, and Director of the Performance. “Our team included Theresa Rohe, Stage Manager, and Gel Macias, Assistant Stage Manager. We have been fortunate to have Jon Barr as our producer and chair of the Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking.   The play is for both laughing and thinking.”

In-Person Public Meeting for the I-25 Safety & Capacity Study

The New Mexico Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, is hosting an In-Person Public Meeting for the I-25 Safety & Capacity Study, on I-25 from the Lohman Interchange to the Doña Ana Interchange and NM 320 (Thorpe Road) from Barela Drive to I-25. The purpose of the study is to improve safety, accommodate regional growth, and address deficiencies (e.g., pavement, drainage, Americans with Disabilities Act facilities, roadway geometry, access control, and multi-modal connectivity).
