PNM Invests $1 Million in support of New Mexico High School Students
ability to pursue Electric Trade Programs and live and work in New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM - November 16, 2023 - PNM's $1 million will fund creating a high school trade program that will equip students with the necessary skills for a successful career in the electrical industry.  

Working closely with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 611, PNM will partner with High Schools in areas it serves to develop and implement this exciting trade program. New Mexico students will be trained so they can meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the electrical industry.

Ignitions Complete on Blue Hole Prescribed Fire

Santa Fe – Today in Santa Rosa, fire crews led by the New Mexico Forestry Division completed ignitions at 3:50 p.m. on the Blue Hole Cienega Prescribed Burn. They conducted mop-up and holding operations this afternoon and evening and will continue to monitor the area tomorrow.  

As weather conditions proved to be within the prescription plan, crews initiated a test fire this morning at 10:55 a.m.; ignitions commenced at 11:37 a.m. Fire crews used drip torches to coax the fire, starting on the east side of the Cienega, and letting the heat and wind do their job to move the low-intensity fire across the two burn units.

NM Veterans Get Involved in the Film Industry

The New Mexico Film Office Hosts Series of Events Discussing How New Mexico Veterans Can Get Involved in the Film and Television Industry

Santa Fe, NM - The New Mexico Film Office (NMFO) is hosting upcoming events to assist veterans seeking to get involved in the film and television industry.

These events are initiatives from NMFO’s Operation Soundstage (OSS) program, a workforce development program that is part of the Film Crew Advancement Program (FCAP) but with some extra perks for qualifying New Mexican veterans. OSS provides a fast track to film industry union membership, offering waived membership fees and required hours for IATSE Local 480 and for joining Teamsters 492. New Mexico veterans interested in a career in the film and television industry who possess transferrable skills or those interested in advancing their career in a specific craft may participate.

New Mexicans Urged to Prevent & Manage Diabetes

November 14 is World Diabetes Day 

SANTA FE — On November 14 World Diabetes Day, New Mexicans are encouraged to take advantage of free programs in the state to help prevent and manage diabetes and other chronic conditions. 

“As a person managing Type 2 diabetes, I encourage New Mexicans to enroll in free programs and services, many of them done virtually, and in English and Spanish, to learn the risk factors of diabetes, how to prevent it, and, if diagnosed, how to manage it,” said Department of Health Secretary Patrick Allen. “Preventing and managing diabetes are key to improving the overall health and quality of life for so many New Mexicans.”

Korean exchange program with NMSU students to engage global issues

 The first step on a path toward a better world is bringing people from diverse perspectives together, particularly those who have the skills to spread that message.



That's the vision of New Mexico State University Journalism and Media Studies assistant professor Gain Park. In late November, students from Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Seoul, South Korea will arrive in Las Cruces to collaborate with NMSU students.



"NMSU-SKKU will work on a project to promote the United Nations' Sustainable Development goals including no poverty, clean water and reduced inequalities," Park said,

NMSU computer science professor recognized for outstanding mentorship

What Son Tran’s students appreciate most are his encouragement and the one-on-one time he spends with them to provide constructive feedback on their research.


 
Tran, New Mexico State University computer science professor and department head, is one of three New Mexico professors honored this fall for outstanding mentorship by the New Mexico Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NM EPSCoR), funded by the National Science Foundation.

NMSU’s premier cancer research partnership renewed for another five years

For more than 20 years, students at New Mexico State University have partnered with award-winning scientists at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle to receive hands-on training in cancer research areas spanning basic science, public health, human biology and clinical research.


 
These paid internships are supported in part by the Partnership for the Advancement of Cancer Research (PACR), a federally funded partnership between NMSU and Fred Hutch. Thanks to a recent $5.9 million grant renewal, this partnership will continue to benefit NMSU students and faculty for the next five years.

DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Day Removes Almost 600,000 Pounds of Unneeded Prescription Medications Across the Country


El Paso, Texas – On Oct. 28, 2023, the community once again emptied their medicine cabinets to help dispose of old, unwanted, and expired medications. Nationwide, DEA and its law enforcement partners collected 599,897 pounds of unneeded medications at 4,675 collection sites nationwide.

Locally, the El Paso Division collected 4,409 pounds from various sites in El Paso, Midland, Alpine, Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and New Mexico Tribal Lands.
