fire weather warningCRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WEDNESDAY FOR LOW HUMIDITY AND STRONG WINDS... .Dry air will push into the region from the west beginning Wednesday morning. By Wednesday afternoon RH's will drop to around 10% for much of souther west New Mexico. Winds will also be gusty in the Gila Region on Wednesday afternoon, so we will see elevated to critical fire weather conditions for severed hours on Wednesday. We will see winds speeds of 20 to 30 mph which will drop off around sunset on Wednesday. Strong winds and critically dry fuels will increase the risk for rapid fire spread.

DEMING - The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) will be monitoring roadway conditions with law enforcement as high wind advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) on Apr. 22, 2022, briefing from NWS attached with Press Release. 

The NMDOT would like to remind the traveling public, blowing dust can escalate to blinding dust storms as they move quickly through remote areas. If you must travel, we recommend you monitor local forecast conditions prior to starting your trip and visit our web site as roadway conditions may change quickly throughout New Mexico.

* WHAT...Southwest winds 40 to 50 mph with gusts of 60 to 70 mph
expected.

* WHERE...Southwest New Mexico, much of the Southern Gila
Wilderness, Sierra County, Northern Dona Ana County, and
Northern Otero County including Sacramento Mountains.

* WHEN...From noon to 10 PM MDT Friday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Blowing dust is likely and dense blowing
dust possible over southern zones along the International
Border. Critical to extreme fire weather conditions will also
continue. A Red Flag Warning is also in effect.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around
trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of
your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if
you must drive.

On both days, the winds will be from the west between 20 to 25 mph. For today, the strongest winds will be along and west of the Rio Grande. These winds combined with single digit relative humidity will lead to a high fire danger. Winds will be slightly stronger on Wednesday area wide with more sunshine.
