Bayard considers a city administrator position

The town of Bayard held a work session and regular meeting November 27, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, Jose Diaz, and Eloy Medina. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.

The work session allows the council to ask questions about items on the agenda.

The council questioned the attendance to the court educational institute for newly elected judge Charles Kelly. Ramos said he would be flying to Albuquerque and renting a car. The Judges Association would pay for the accommodations. The council questioned him flying and not driving his car and Diaz said it had been done in the past. Medina said they had always driven. Ramos added his flight would cost $62.35 one way. Frances Gonzales commented it would be cheaper to fly and right now they airline company has a 20 percent off on flights. Ramos said he would purchase ten tickets now because of the sale. They would have a year to use those flights and would need them for the upcoming Municipal League conference.

Silver City / Las Cruces, NM – The following information is for distributing a Missing Endangered Person Advisory from the Silver City Police Department. For details, contact Silver City PD at (575) 388-8840.

Silver City PD is asking the public for assistance locating Maisie Yniguez, 42, of Silver City. She is 5'5" tall, weighs 220 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, yellow or tan shorts, and white shoes. She is believed to be in Las Cruces and was last seen on November 2nd at around 2:00 p.m. at Apodaca Park, located at 801 East Madrid in Las Cruces.

Bayard discusses ICIP

The town of Bayard held a special meeting November 20, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, Jose Diaz, and Eloy Medina. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.

The special meeting had been called to discuss the ICIP (Infrastructure capital improvement plan). Senator Siah Correa Hemphill and Representative Luis Terrazas (phone) attended to participate in the discussion. They do the plan yearly and present it to the legislature for possible funding.

Intoxicated driver arrested

Silver City Police Department officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on Hudson Street near the intersection of 6th Street on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at about 12:38 a.m. According to an SCPD accident report, officers located a silver 2003 Toyota with heavy front-end damage.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles Moran, 66, Silver City, struck a posted sign in the median, damaging the sign. Moran stated he was coming from Little Toad Brewery and had been there a long time, and officers could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Moran's person. The report stated Moran refused to perform standard field sobriety tests.

Man working the medical system arrested

On Saturday, Dec. 9, 2023, at about 11:53 p.m. a Silver City Police Department officer responded to the Gila Regional Medical Center regarding a male trespassing. According to an SCPD incident report, an ER doctor was concerned that Michael White, 48, homeless, was abusing the medical system by repeatedly calling for ambulance service. The doctor advised that White, upon being discharged, would immediately call for an ambulance seeking medical services, but in reality, he only wanted to avoid being out in the cold weather.

The officer verified that White had an active criminal trespass warning for GRMC unless the visit was for a legitimate medical reason. The ER doctor stated she had exhausted all necessary procedures for White and requested law enforcement assistance to remove him from the hospital.

Wreaths Across America truck came through Silver City 121323

On Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, escorted by Silver City Police Department, Grant County Sheriff's Department vehicles, along with American Legion Riders, a semi-truck carrying wreaths for the annual Wreaths Across America wreath placement and ceremony came through Silver City on its way to Fort Bayard National Cemetery for storage and preparation for the wreath placement and ceremony, which will take place Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Bayard introduces McGruff the Crime Dog

Bayard Police Chief Hector Carrillo stated, "Our focus and goals are going to be attending Cobre schools and youth programs around the mining district to teach the young generation to call for any suspicious activity they encounter to help reduce crime in our community. McGruff the Crime Dog will be utilized throughout our Neighborhood Watch Program (that is being worked on), cleaning up streets, and making appearances at events throughout Bayard. McGruff will encourage and teach children and teenagers to protect themselves from substance abuse and bullies."

GCSO seeks suspect in fatal crash

david allen smithSuspect in fatal crash identified and an affidavit for arrest warrant issued. On January 28, 2023 at approximately 11:25 P.M. the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of highway 356 and Santa Rita Mine Road in regards to a possible roll over crash.

While deputies were on scene, another deputy from the Grant County Sheriff's Office was out with a male subject, later Identified as Joseph Sifuentes, on State Highway 152, who had severe head trauma and compound fractures on both his legs. It was later known Joseph had been struck by a motor vehicle, driver identified as David Allen Smith, who had been driving the vehicle found on highway 356.
