The regular monthly board meeting of the Grant Soil and Water Conservation District will be held Monday May 20, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the NRCS Building; 3082 32nd Street Bypass; Suite C; Silver City, NM  88061.   The meeting is open to the public.

Traffic Alert Chip seal operations begin May 13 in Grant Co.

Motorists should expect roadway closures. 

SILVER CITY- The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) District One along with Highland Enterprise Inc. (Contractor) will begin a maintenance operation project on Monday, May 13, 2024, to place “chip seal” pavement on NM 152 in Grant County. The chip seal process is a surface treatment that is placed on the existing pavement. It is designed to seal out moisture and create a more durable surface extending the longevity of the roadway.

Gila National Forest to conduct prescribed burn on Slaughter Mesa

Prescribed fire near Quemado Lake will help restore meadow and forest habitats to benefit wildlife

SILVER CITY, NM, May 7, 2024 – The Quemado Ranger District is planning to use prescribed fire to treat approximately 2,755 acres of the Gila National Forest in the Slaughter Mesa area south and east of Quemado Lake as well as north and east of Sand Flat starting as early as May 14 as fuel and weather conditions and resource availability allow. The prescribed burn will occur in meadow and ponderosa pine forest habitats, targeting primarily grass and ladder fuels.

Registration Now Open for Nature Discovery Summer Camps

With support from the New Mexico Outdoor Equity Fund, the Lineberry Foundation, and the Alex Olsen and Martyn Pearson Memorial Donor Advised Fund at the Grant County Community Foundation, the Silver City Watershed Keepers is offering their third annual free Nature Discovery Summer Camp for incoming 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

Participation is capped at 20 campers per session, so register your child early but no later than June 3 to reserve a spot!

Indigenous People on Climate Change Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

May 12 at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street  – “Indigenous People on Climate Change”

On May 12, UUFSC will present and discuss two TED Talks related to Indigenous perspectives on climate change. In the first video, "Indigenous Knowledge Meets Science to Take on Climate Change," environmental activist Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim proposes that we need both science and Indigenous wisdom to face climate change.  She shares how her nomadic community in Chad is working closely with scientists to restore endangered ecosystems and offers lessons on how to create more resilient communities.
