On Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, the Gough Park parking lot filled with shoppers checking out all the offerings of native plants from cacti to shrubs to trees ready to plant to flowers, accompanied by lots of information to go along with the plants and planting from organizations from the area.
The annual Native Plant Sale hosted by the Gila Native Plant Society offers to plant enthusiasts a variety of native plants and the information about taking care of them.
Defender of Rabbit fired by Sheriff Villanueva.

On Friday, the sheriff's deputy, Alejandro Gomez who allegedly killed the baby rabbit, was fired by Sheriff Villanueva along with the two supervisors who laughed while the incident occurred.
The deputy, Marcus Salas, who tried to defend the rabbit from his fellow officers, was also fired. A source has said that the reason for Salas's firing was that he failed to act. The source also said that that Villanueva didn't like Salas because he brought attention to this event.
When one reads the transcript or watches the video, it is evident that the situation was three against one with Gomez threatening Salas with his taser.
Tow Silver City women charged in fraudulent Medicaid scheme
According to the above KRQE report published on Aug. 14, 2025, a mother and daughter, residents of Silver City, NM, have been accused of stealing more than a million dollars through their fraudulent billing practices.
The New Mexico Department of Justice has alleged that Susanne and Bethanne Kee took advantage of children in their after-school daycare program.

The Silver City Consolidated Schools held a special meeting July 31, 2025. Members in attendance included Ashley Montenegro, Patrick Cohn and Kimberly Klement. Superintendent William Hawkins also attended. Michelle Diaz and Mike McMillan didn't attend.
Louis Alvarez, associate superintendent, had an update on the student handbooks. Since the last meeting they had made the changes requested by the board. He had provided copies of all the handbooks with the updates.
Michele McCain, finance director had some awards for bids. The audit RFP (request for proposal) had been sent out twice. The first time they didn't have any responses. The second time they had received one. They would provide in person service. The bid will be awarded to Beasley, Mitchell and Co. of Las Cruces.

The town of Bayard held a special meeting July 30, 2025. Attendance included Mayor John L. Ojinaga, Mayor Pro Tem Eloy Medina and councilors, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales and Gilbert Ortiz. Martha Salas, city clerk, also attended.
The council approved the agenda.

The Silver City Town Council held a work session meeting July 24, 2025. Attendance to the meeting included Mayor Ken Ladner, Mayor Pro Tem Guadalupe Cano, and Councilors Nicholas Prince, Rudy Bencomo and Stan Snider.
No public input currently.
The meeting had been called to discuss the fiscal year budget starting July 1, 2025, and ending June 30, 2026. Alex Brown, town manager, apologized for bring the budget before the council so late. It had to do with the transition of the water billing software and cash receipt software that affects almost all of the funds. He commended the staff for all their work on this, which had resulted in working on weekends and late during the week.
